If you’re at all tuned-in to the Texas Tech sports world, then you’ve probably heard the buzz around campus and Lubbock about the Red Raider men’s basketball team. They finished the regular season 19-11 overall and 9-9 in the conference, including huge back-to-back-to-back wins over top 25 ranked teams. A little bit earlier in the season, there were some buzzer beater, game over heartbreakers, and some really close games with top teams around the Big 12.
It has been an exciting season, and many are noting that while our team is young, they play with the determination and willpower of a seasoned team. In just a few short years, Coach Tubby Smith has transformed the Texas Tech program to one of respect, and the next few years should be very exciting.
With young guys like Justin Gray, Aaron Ross, Zach Smith, and Matthew Temple, this team has a lot of potential. Smith is a slam dunk beast and also a great defensive player, shutting down the opponents at the rim. Toddrick Gotcher has helped keep us in many games by nailing key three-pointers, and with a nickname like “GOATcher,” what’s not to like? While center Norense Odiase’s season was cut short with a foot injury, we hope he makes a full recovery and comes back stronger next year (and maybe post season this year).
The Red Raiders open Big 12 Conference Tournament play Wednesday against TCU. After the Big 12 tournament, we very well may be headed to the NIT tournament or even the NCAA Torunament! Regardless, this team should head into the off season with a strong confidence knowing that the best is yet to come. If you have not been out to a game yet this season, it is so fun for the whole family. The players really do feed off of the crowd, and it is fun to cheer them on with fellow Red Raiders! We like to get there 45 minutes earlier to enjoy warm ups, the band, and the fun atmosphere.
Also – let’s not forget about our Lady Raiders! They need fans at their games, too, and they are an exciting team to watch.
