Refinishing your countertops and tubs can increase the value of your home.
Finding the small shop of Hard Tops of Lubbock at 10805 CR 2950, right off the Slaton highway, was a little confusing as the sign still read J&D Auto Sales. But finding the business that refurbishes outdated countertops and bathtubs was well worth the effort as soon as I was welcomed by the owner, Jose Sanchez.
The 20-year-old business was relocated from downtown Lubbock after Sanchez bought the business three years ago. With a broad smile and a firm handshake, Sanchez made me feel right at home. We sat in his office, just off the main reception area, in a small space where a foosball table takes up half of the room. Laughing about it, he said the guys he works with and he had been playing a game that morning before going to work, as usual, but they would finish later.
In between taking phone calls about business and one from a guy working on a home project for him and his wife, he apologized to me for having to be so busy and continued chatting with me as if we were long-time friends. He told the man working on his home project that things sounded OK, but that they should wait to check with his wife before moving forward.
After laughing together about what a smart man he is, we continued talking business. The business had started in 1994, and Sanchez worked for Hard Tops for four years before buying it and relocating to Slaton. He explained there are many Hard Tops around the nation now, but the first one was in Lubbock.
“Mark, the previous owner, embedded in every single person working here that we’re going into people’s homes and they have to know us and we have to earn their trust before they will want us to work in their homes,” Sanchez said. “It’s something we still continue today. I’ve done my best to continue giving the best customer care possible, before we even begin the process of refinishing. We strive to make the client happy. We’re not happy until they are.”
One part of the business is updating outdated kitchen countertops. “Our most requested finished-look is granite,” Sanchez said. He explained for much less money than using the popular rock, his team can provide customers with an inexpensive alternative that looks just like the real thing. “From start to finish, for most jobs, it’s about three-and-a-half hours. You don’t have to be without your house or kitchen for more than a day. And whatever color you can imagine for granite or solid color, we can make you.” He said you can see some of the products and more information on Facebook under Hard Tops of Lubbock.
Sanchez said his products can last for 15 years or more and after the one-year, no-questions-asked warranty expires, his team will come out to make touch-ups to your product with the exact match of paint you used as they keep it in stock for that purpose. “We went out to do a job for a lady whose countertop was around 15 years old that still looked perfect. She just wanted a new color—that’s how inexpensive we are.”
“One of the biggest problems with outdated things in homes is the bathtub,” Sanchez said. “Instead of tearing out the old one—and you’re looking at over $1,500, I can repair it for about $295. And you are only out of a tub for a day, not weeks. We cover rust holes, even repair large holes or refinish in white or any color. We can do any surface, like an older jet tub and can give you any new color. We’ve refinished tubs that were pink and even green.”
Sanchez said there are many reasons to refinish your countertops and tubs with Hard Tops, including increasing the value of your home and getting to enjoy where you live because it looks great. But the most important reason? Sanchez said, “You are not just buying a product upgrade, you are trusting us and you are going to tell your friends and so on. We’re going to be a part of your home for a long-time. A lot of our customers start with the kitchen and then the bath and continue on after that. We just want people to know how much we really care about people and about their property. We will earn your trust.”
As for the office environment, one of the guys popped in a few times as we talked off and on and Sanchez easily gave his attention to make sure his employee got the quick answers he needed. One of the other employees and a baby are hanging out in the main office with another one of his four employees. “We’re very much like family. We’ve become a family and have fun.” He continued, and laughs, “We always challenge people coming in here to a game (foosball) and we have never lost.” A I was leaving the office, the guys started playing another round of foosball and I could hear them laughing as I left with a smile on my face.
